A New Approach to Learning

In a groundbreaking move, Mesa Public Schools is set to pilot an innovative social media content creation course this fall. As part of an overarching plan to equip students with practical skills, the district is transitioning several high schools to a college and career academy model. The idea is driven by student feedback emphasizing the need for more relevant and real-world learning experiences.

Career-Themed Academies

Jennifer Echols, the district’s director of teaching and learning, highlighted, “They’ll really be learning through the lens of a very broad career theme.” For instance, some schools will introduce a business and entrepreneurship academy model, where social media content creation fits perfectly as an elective course.

Exploring Social Media’s Role

The new course aims to explore social media’s multifaceted role, touching areas such as entertainment, marketing, journalism, and activism. As stated in KJZZ, Echols explained, “[They will learn about] the different technology tools required to create engaging content for social media, analytics, and revenue generation.”

Finding a Niche and Ensuring Safety

Participants will also be guided in finding their niche online while ensuring safe digital practices. This initiative is set to begin at Red Mountain and Mountain View high schools, with plans for expansion if successful.

Real-World Interaction

Aside from learning from seasoned instructors, students will benefit from guest visits by local business representatives, who will share insights on utilizing social media to generate new customer bases.

Pioneers in Education

This project reflects a significant step towards modernizing education in Mesa, preparing students not only for college but for real-world challenges by understanding and harnessing the power of social media within their careers.
